What to do????

I have a chance to change jobs and I really do not know what to do. I am scared and excited all at once and I feel like I am going to pop out of my skin. I was offered a flight nurse position with better benefits, less work, and more money. In order to attain the position I have a medical test with drip rates, ekg's, and 5 mega codes. On the other hand, I am loyal to my ER, I have been there since 2003 and have a love hate relationship with the typical er stuff we see. I know grass is not greener on the other side, but do I pass up this opportunity and stay because it is what I know? Or do I take a leap and go flying around? I love my er, but I also love helicopters and and I can nurse in both! So there is my choices just don't know what to do.

  1. Take the job! It sounds like a good experience! I would love to fly, buy my hubby would absolutely NOT go for it...

  2. Leave with out "burning your bridges" I say try it... if it doesn't work out and you were a good employee, many places will want you back.

  3. Would never burn bridges, the hospital is my second home. My boss knows and doesn't want me to go. If I do take the other job I will still work occasional shifts in the er.

  4. What a terrific opportunity!
Seven years... are you fully vested in your pension plan? Or would the extra income from the new position offset any pension loss? What would be the impact on your family? From the way you presented the info, it sounds like you could take the new job and still get to temp in the current one. Looking forward to hearing what you decide.

  5. Warmsocks, first it is great to see ya again:) been missing some of my blogging people.
Nope we lost all of our pension and time in when the hospital was sold. I can still work in the er very easily. I just have a hard time leaving what has been my home and family for another position, but I will see what happens. I still have to pass all those tests on the 15th. Wish me luck

  6. How'd the testing go? Do we get to know what you decided to do?

  7. Hi. I'm a following but have never commented before. I agree with ladyk - take the new job w/o burning your bridge so that you can come back if the new job sucks. On the other hand though - I know a few people who have left a long-time, secure job for a new "better" job; only to get laid-off for multiple reasons & then find themselves on unemployment, unemployable because every job they interview for says they are over-qualified & cannot find any job on their qualifications-level. So - take the job; but only if they will hire you back if it doesn't work out. I see this is a post from awhile ago - so what did you decide??

  8. Warmsocks, I passed the testing with flying colors "pun intended":)
Em, I am doing both. I love the job that I have been in long term, and it breaks my heart to think of leaving it. So, I am doing both part time:) the best of 2 worlds, working in the ER and flying around the next day.
